CALLSCRIBER Project

This project aims to create an integrated platform where the contents of intercepted calls are automatically transcribed (using automatic speech recognition technology) and segmented according to the speaker.

Description:
This project has the participation of the Judiciary Police, through its PJ-UTI-AESE unit, as a user and receiver of its results. The system is managed by employees of PJ-UTI-AESE, whom we thank for all their effort, help and constant dedication throughout the development phase of this platform.

The CallScriber project resulted in a centralized system with national coverage where investigators from criminal police agencies and intelligence services can perform, consult and export the complete transcripts of telephone interceptions carried out.

INNOVATIVE SOLUTION
This project sought to create an integrated platform where the contents of intercepted calls are automatically imported, managed, transcribed (using automatic speech recognition technology) and segmented according to the participants in the interaction.

A multilevel representation of each dialogue is generated, visually identifying the speaker and what was said at each moment of the call. In this way, the platform makes available to users an intelligent tool for editing and correcting automatic transcripts, being able to automatically generate the respective institutional report. The system also has automatic content analysis tools, allowing the detection of patterns and classification by types of conversations.

IN CONSTANT EVOLUTION
Based on the editing data obtained by the researchers, the system has pre-integrated a set of learning tools that allow a constant improvement of the automatic results through corrections introduced by the users. Thus, this makes the platform, over time, improve its ability to make more correct transcripts, increasing the success rate and reducing the correction time spent by researchers.

CONFIDENTIALITY
The entire management of the platform is local to the security forces' facilities, safeguarding the danger of sensitive data being viewed by individuals not duly accredited. All access to the system is therefore controlled and, depending on the permissions of each user, only certain intersections can be consulted. Thus, we intend to fulfill all the security and confidentiality requirements that a task of this nature requires.

Grants: This project financed under Portugal 2020 has the participation of the Judiciary Police, through its PJ-UTI-AESE unit, as a user and receiver of the project results. The system is managed by PJ-UTI-AESE employees who also ensure that, as in the Paragon system, only authorized investigators have access and only to the transcripts of the assigned targets, thus guaranteeing the confidentiality of this entire operation.
