1. Project Overview
Automated telephone and service interfaces have traditionally depended on rigid menus and narrowly scripted interactions. VOICE NUC addressed the development of speech-processing technologies capable of supporting more natural exchanges between users and automated services. The project brought together speech recognition, speech synthesis and dialogue management to support conversational interfaces adapted to specific service domains. This approach aimed to make automated interactions more accessible and intuitive while reducing the need for continuous human-operator involvement. VOICE NUC was supported under Portugal’s QREN 2007–2013 framework through the Lisbon Regional Operational Programme and co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund.
2. VoiceInteraction's Contribution
VoiceInteraction was the project’s sole beneficiary and led the development of its speech-processing and dialogue technologies. The company’s work focused on integrating automatic speech recognition and speech synthesis with dialogue-management components capable of guiding domain-specific conversations. These technologies supported the development of interactive voice-response systems for applications such as customer service, banking and other telephone-based services. VOICE NUC formed part of VoiceInteraction’s early investment in transforming speech research into practical systems for automated voice interaction.

4. Outcomes & Impact
VOICE NUC strengthened VoiceInteraction’s research and development capabilities in automated dialogue and speech-enabled service interfaces. The project contributed to the company’s early development of interactive voice-response systems combining recognition, synthesis and dialogue technologies. It also helped establish a technical foundation for subsequent work in conversational interfaces and human–machine interaction. Public records confirm the approval and funding of the operation but do not provide a closure report, performance indicators or a complete list of formally accepted deliverables.
