1. Project Overview
RHESIS is a European Defence Fund (EDF) research project focused on creating a new generation of human-AI dialogue systems designed for defence and security operations. The project aims to develop AI systems capable of interacting with users through both speech and text while operating across all official European Union languages. As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly integrated into operational environments, defence organizations face growing challenges related to multilingual information access, explainability, trust, privacy, and human-machine collaboration. RHESIS addresses these challenges by developing adaptive dialogue technologies that allow personnel to engage naturally with AI systems while maintaining transparency, security, and operational reliability. The project builds upon existing European large language models and applies advanced domain adaptation techniques to immerse AI systems in defence-specific terminology, concepts, operational procedures, and knowledge structures. These models are then refined for practical dialogue scenarios supporting intelligence analysis, strategic planning, tactical operations, and lifecycle support activities. By combining speech technologies, natural language understanding, multilingual processing, and trustworthy AI principles, RHESIS contributes to the development of sovereign European AI capabilities for critical operational environments.
2. VoiceInteraction's Contribution
VoiceInteraction contributes its expertise in speech recognition, language technologies, multilingual speech processing, and operational deployment of speech-driven systems. Within RHESIS, VoiceInteraction supports the integration of speech interfaces into the broader human-AI dialogue framework, enabling users to interact with AI systems through natural spoken language. The company's experience in multilingual automatic speech recognition, real-time transcription, language adaptation, and operational speech processing helps ensure that dialogue interactions remain effective across diverse languages and operational contexts. VoiceInteraction also contributes practical knowledge gained from deploying speech technologies in mission-critical environments where reliability, scalability, privacy, and operational performance are essential requirements.

4. Outcomes & Impact
RHESIS advances the state of the art in trustworthy conversational AI for defence and security applications. The project contributes methodologies for adapting large language models to highly specialized operational domains while preserving explainability, privacy, and user trust. It also demonstrates how speech technologies can serve as a natural interaction layer between users and increasingly complex AI systems. For VoiceInteraction, RHESIS strengthens capabilities in multilingual conversational AI, domain-adapted language models, secure speech processing, and human-AI collaboration. The knowledge generated through the project supports future developments in speech-enabled decision support systems, operational intelligence platforms, and next-generation AI assistants for security, defence, and institutional environments.
